Chess and Opera in Vienna
Operation Capablanca Photos:
"Operation Capablanca", a chess opera written by the Viennese artist Zenita Komad, had its first outing last thursday, September 1, at the Kunsthalle Wien (Vienna Contemporary Art Center). The opera which is set around a game won by Capablanca against Herman Steiner in 1933 has been performed on her installation consisting of a giant chess board and 32 sculpture pieces. Coinciding with Komad´s art project was a GM tournament (average rating 2443). 17 year old Arik Braun from Germany claimed first prize and his first GM result.

Chess is a vibrant and dramatic musical composed in the mid eighties by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA fame with lyrics by Tim Rice.

ABBA songs: Happy New Year, The Winner Takes It All, Dancing Queen, Take A Chance On Me, Thank You For The Music, Lay All Your Love On Me, Money, Money, Money.

The best Russian operas IMHO: "Boris Godunov" by Modest Mussorgsky, "The Love for Three Oranges" by Sergei Prokofiev, "Sadko" by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, "The Golden Cockerel" by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, "Eugene Onegin" by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
