The Results of the Women's World Championship 2001-2002

By Boris Schipkov

O wondrous moment! There before me,
A radiant, fleeting dream, you stood,
A vision fancy fashioned for me,
A glimpse of perfect womanhood.
Alexander Pushkin (1825), translated by Irina Zheleznova

Zhu Chen (China) became the new Women's World Champion. She won the greatest number of games in the Championship - 13, drawn 9 games and lost 5. Zhu Chen beat Maggiolo, Petrenko, Maric, Khurtsidze, Chiburdanidze and Kosteniuk. She played very strong and nice, especially in the attacks.
The Vice-Champion seventeen-year-old Russian Alexandra Kosteniuk was one of the most beautiful girls of the World Championship. She had 12 wins, only 2 draws and 6 defeats. Kosteniuk beat Shahade, Hoang Thanh Trang, Galliamova, Skripchenko-Lautier, Xu Yuhua.

The Ex-Champion Maia Chiburdanidze (Georgia) shown fine play. She won 7 games, drawn 6 games and lost 3. Chiburdanidze beat Houli, Sedina, Ciuksyte, Peng Zhaoqin.
Another semifinalist Xu Yuhua (China) also acted vigorously and beat Arouche, Danielian, Baginskaite, Foisor. She won 9 games, drawn 5 games and lost 4.

Almira Skripchenko-Lautier (Moldova), Peng Zhaoqin (The Netherlands), Nino Khurtsidze (Georgia), Cristina Adela Foisor (Romania) were in the good shape and pass through 3 rounds.

It is interesting I exactly predicted the future results in my previous article "The forecast of the Women's World Championship's 2001-2002 results". Variations of the Final were 3. Xu Yuhua - Zhu Chen and 4. Alexandra Kosteniuk - Maya Chiburdanidze. Also Zhu Chen was one of the favourites in the struggle for the title of the Women's World Champion in the article. Good luck!
