Notes by Boris Schipkov

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 e6 3. e3 c5 4. c4 Nc6 5. Nc3 Nf6 6. dxc5
The alternatives are 6. cxd5 and 6. a3. Possible is 6. a3 Ne4 7. Bd3 Nxc3 8. bxc3 Be7 9. O-O O-O 10. Qc2 h6 1/2-1/2, a draw in Vaisser, A - Koch, JR, FRA-ch 1996. Or 11. Rd1 Na5 12. Ne5 dxc4 13. Nxc4 Nxc4 14. Bxc4 Qc7 15. Ba2 cxd4 16. exd4 Bd7 17. Bb1 f5 18. Ba2 Rac8 19. Bb2 Kh8 20. c4 Rfe8 21. Qe2 Bf6 22. Re1 Rcd8 23. c5 Bc6 24. Qh5 Qd7 25. Rad1 Bd5 26. Bb1 Rf8 27. Bc1 1/2-1/2, a draw in Rustemov, A - Colovic, A, ECC, Panormo 2001.
6...Bxc5 7. a3 a6
Interesting is 7...O-O.
8. b4 Bd6
In the game Gurevich, M - Okhotnik, USSR 1984 White obtained a small advantage after 8... Ba7 9. Bb2 O-O 10. Qc2 Qe7 11. Rd1 Rd8 12. Be2 dxc4 13. Rxd8+ Nxd8 14. Ne4 Nxe4 15. Qxe4 f5 16. Qxc4 b5 17. Qf4.
9. Bb2 O-O 10. Qd2
Possible is 10. cxd5 exd5 11. Be2 or 10. Qc2.
10...Qe7!?

11. Bd3?!
Losing a tempo. Better was 11. cxd5 exd5 12. Be2 or 12. Nxd5!? Nxd5 13. Qxd5 Be6 14. Qd2! (14. Qd1? Nxb4! 15. axb4 Bxb4+ 16. Nd2 Rad8 17. Bc1 Rxd2! 18. Bxd2 Rd8 winning) 14... Rac8 (14... Nxb4? 15. axb4 Bxb4 16. Bc3) 15. Bc3 Rfd8 16. Qb2 and Black has some compensation for a pawn.
11...dxc4 12. Bxc4 b5 13. Bd3 Rd8 14. Qe2 Bb7 15. O-O Ne5 16. Nxe5 Bxe5 17. f4 Bc7 18. e4 Rac8 19. e5?
A mistake. White opens the long diagonal. Correct is 19. Rac1 with a small but lasting edge for Black.
19...Bb6+ 20. Kh1

20...Ng4!
Here Black has a tremendous advantage and a strong attack on White's king.
21. Be4
If 21. Qxg4 then 21...Rxd3. Also hopeless is 21. Ne4 Rxd3! (21... Qh4! 22. h3 Rxd3) 22. Qxd3 Bxe4 23. Qxe4 Qh4 24. h3 Qg3 25. hxg4 Qh4 mate!
21...Qh4 22. g3
Or 22. h3 Rxc3! 23. Bxc3 Bxe4 24. Qxg4 Qxg4 25. hxg4 Rd3 26. Kh2 Rxc3 winning.

22...Rxc3!!
A very beautiful blow. Black sacrifices his queen.
23. gxh4 Rd2!!
Another superb and ruby strike!

24. Qxd2
If 24. Bxb7 then 24...Rxe2 25. Bg2 Rh3.
24...Bxe4+ 25. Qg2 Rh3!!
A final magnificent blow. White can take the e4 bishop 26. Qxe4 then 26...Rxh2 mate. Or 26. Rf3 (26. Rf2 Bxf2 27. Qxe4 Rxh2 mate) 26... Bxf3 27. Qxf3 Rxh2 mate. The best Akiba Rubinstein's game.
White resigned. 0-1
