Mamedyarov, Shakhriyar (2760) - Carlsen, Magnus (2881) [D38]
Vugar Gashimov Memorial, Shamkir (6) 2014

Notes by Boris Schipkov

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4
The Nimzo-Indian Defence.
4. Qc2 d5
World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen played this position as Black and White.

5. Nf3
A rare line. The main continuations are 5. cxd5 and 5. a3.
5...dxc4 6. Bg5 b5 7. a4 c6 8. g3 Bb7 9. Bg2 Nbd7 10. O-O Qb6 11. e4 a6

12. Rfd1!?
An interesting novelty. Other moves are worse: 12. Rfe1?! O-O 13. e5 Nd5 14. Re4 Rfe8 15. Rg4 Nf8, Len, G - Dozenko, V, Smolensk 1992, and Black gets an advantage with the strong advance 15...c5!, attacking the centre;
12. Be3?! O-O (12...c5!) 13. Ne5 Rad8 14. Rad1 c5!, with a clear edge to Black in Sajn, S - Kozamernik, J, Bled 2001;
12. e5?! Nd5 13. Bd2 c5!, with a clear edge to Black in Erchinger, H - Prosser, R, CServe email 1997.
12...h6!
A logical reply.
13. Be3 O-O 14. d5 c5 15. a5

15...Qd8!?
Also possible is 15...Qa7. After 15...Bxa5 16. dxe6 Bxc3 17. exd7 Bb4 18. e5 Be4 19. Qe2 Bd3 20. Rxd3 cxd3 21. Qxd3 Ng4 22. Ng5 hxg5 23. Bxa8 Nxe5 24. Qf5 Nxd7 25. Bf3 White has good compensation for two pawns.
16. dxe6 fxe6 17. Nh4 Bxc3 18. bxc3 Qe8
18...Qc7!? is interesting.
19. f4 Rd8 20. h3
Also possible is 20. Rd6.
20...Rf7 21. Rd6 e5!
Black counterattacks in the centre.

22. f5?
A mistake. Correct is 22. Re1 to defend e4 pawn, with compensation.
22...Nf8!
Black plans to seize the open d-file.
23. Bxc5 Rxd6 24. Bxd6 Rd7!
The decisive move.

25. Bxf8
Or 25. Bb4 N8h7 26. Ng6 Ng5, winning. After 25. Bc5 Rd3 26. Re1 Qd8 Black pressures on the d-file and attacks weak White's pawns, winning.
Qxf8 26. Rd1 Qc5+ 27. Kh2 Bxe4!
A nice finish. Black wins the knight endgame after 28. Bxe4 Rxd1 29. Qxd1 Nxe4 30. Qd8+ (30. Ng2 Nxc3) 30...Kh7 31. Qb6 Qf2+ 32. Qxf2 Nxf2.
White resigned. 0-1
